New Desserts at No 246



Flourless chocolate cake with Citron


Recently, No. 246, one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Decatur, debuted a new dessert program. Created by Taria Camerino, whose mad pastry skills you may remember from her Sugar Coated Radical days, the new menu features smaller desserts with fun cocktail pairings. I was one of the lucky few invited to attend a tasting and I was just blown away by all those fabulous treats!

Taria's commitment to sourcing excellent chocolate is displayed beautifully in the chocolate cake, it's lighter textured than I anticipated, and the tangy quenelle of mascarpone on top is a nice foil to the richness of the chocolate.

Harvey Darko made with Ramazzotti Amaro, maple syrup and Red Hare Watership Brown Ale

While I am not generally a beer drinker, I'm more of a hard cider girl, even I found this to be pretty palatable, perhaps due to the maple syrup, I do love syrup. The bitterness of the ale worked nicely with the slight bitterness of the chocolate and citron.
 

Pistachio cannoncini


These have a pistachio filling very similar to what you might find in a cannoli, but the cornets are made with a puff pastry type dough, so it's like and flaky when you bite into it. I will admit I had to ask what was in the filling, as it was so smooth and light and didn't quite believe it could be ricotta, but in fact it was. I wish more places filled their cannoli with such a lovely filling!

This was my favorite cocktail that we tried, light, bubbly, and delicious! I could happily enjoy this with any of the desserts, or even just order one instead of dessert, if I've eaten too much of their delicious pasta for my dinner.

In addition to the new dessert menu available daily, weekends in Decatur have just become a little sweeter with the debut of the pastry windows. Now, every Saturday and Sunday, window-shopping takes on a new meaning as the windows at No. 246 are filled with platters and jars and baskets of more of Taria's fantastic sweet and savory pastry creations.

Housemade Panforte with myriad nuts and spices

You can buy it by the wedge, or even buy a whole round, the complex flavors are the perfect accompaniment to any cheese course.

Chocolate Black Pepper Sables

Made with single origin Venezuelan chocolate, these cookies show off Taria's French pastry knowledge. Don't worry that they will be too spicy, the pepper just highlights the chocolate.

Root Vegetable Turnover

Nice tender pastry filled with potatoes, carrots, onions, pepperoncini, cheese and sprinkled with fennel seeds.

Semolina Custard Tarts

These were one of my favorites, the semolina pastry was toothsome without being gritty and filled with a nice simple custard. It's the sort of thing your Italian Grandma would bake you for a snack if you had an Italian Grandma.

Apple, Blue Cheese, Balsamic Flatbreads with fresh Tarragon


Another of my favorite tastes, I had never thought about pairing apples and tarragon, but they were such a fantastic combination, I plan to add tarragon to every apple dish I make from now on.

Lemon Meringue Tarts

It was at this point that I overdosed on sweets and simply could not take another bite. While I have not personally tasted every pastry, I encourage you to take up where I left off and head over to No. 246 this weekend to sample a few of these treats.
